菱文様は縄文時代から存在する非常に古い文様で、ヒシという植物の葉や実の形を模したものともいわれます。
江戸で染められる裾模様（着物の裾のみに柄があること）に「江戸褄模様」という名前をつけたことが起源とされ、現在では結婚式に着られる裾模様の着物そのものを指します。
その格子の中に楕円を入れ込むことで、抜け目のない雰囲気もイメージさせます。
